The Lost Cause:

An Old War in the New South

I spent a lot of time in 2011 on the road, traveling the American South with my filmmaking partner, Matt Roush, in search of the Civil War. We attempted to create a documentary film that addressed the questions that surround the Civil War and why it's still an issue that is so difficult for Americans to talk about. As part of our project, we fell in with a unit of Confederate re-enactors. Here is a clip of some of our best battle footage intercut with dialogue from world-renowned re-enactor Robert Lee Hodge and New York Times bestselling author Jeff Shaara.

Attila the Hun at Home​​​​​

It would be easy to write off Attila the Hun at Home as a shameless knockoff of its predecessor, but by the time I got to this assignment (my final project in a computer animation class), I knew a lot more about operating in three dimensions than I did the first time around. Here, I experimented with camera angles and voiceover, recording the complete soundtrack in Apple GarageBand. As for the subject matter, I tried to think of something mundane that might cause someone to want to go out pillaging. Here's what I came up with. 

Martin Van Buren:

Samurai Badass!

I took an animation course in the spring of 2011, and the assignment on this one was to animate a brief biography of a historical figure. I decided to take some poetic license with the life and times of our eighth president, Martin Van Buren, about whom I knew almost nothing at the time. Well, to be fair, I still don't know too much about him, but it's nice to think of him as a samurai badass. This short was shown at a showcase of student work at the end of the spring semester at the Student Life Cinema on FSU's campus.
